Using Retinol Creams Safely: Anti-Aging and Stretch Mark

Our Anti-Aging Cream and Stretch Mark Cream both contain retinol. How to use them safely: patch testing, daily sunscreen, and why the stretch mark cream is not for pregnancy unless a doctor advises.

Quick answer: Our Anti-Aging Cream (Day & Night) and our Stretch Mark Cream both contain retinol. Patch test before you start, apply only to clean, dry, unbroken skin, and use sunscreen in the daytime while you use the anti-aging cream. The Stretch Mark Cream is not recommended during pregnancy or breastfeeding unless a doctor advises it. Stop using either cream if irritation occurs.

What retinol is, in simple words

Retinol is a form of Vitamin A used in many creams for smoother, firmer-looking skin. It is a popular ingredient, but it is also one that needs a bit of care. Some people find it can make skin feel dry or sensitive, especially at the start, and skin can be more sensitive to the sun while you use it.

The Anti-Aging Cream (Day & Night)

This is a smoothing, firming cream for mature-looking skin, with Collagen, Retinol, Niacinamide, Avocado Extract, Almond Oil and Vitamin E.

As printed on the tube, it helps reduce the look of fine lines, supports firmer-looking skin, nourishes mature-looking skin, helps improve the look of skin elasticity and leaves skin feeling softer and smoother.

  • How to use: apply a small amount to clean, dry skin and massage gently in upward, circular motions until absorbed.
  • How often: twice a day, morning and night.
  • Size and price: 50 g, Rs 1,990

The key caution: the pack says it contains retinol and to use sunscreen during the day while you are using it. In Sri Lanka's sun, that is not a small point. If you apply it in the morning, finish with sunscreen every time.

The Stretch Mark Cream

This is a smoothing, moisturising body cream for areas such as the tummy, thighs and hips, with Centella Extract, Cocoa Butter, Marine Collagen, Hyaluronic Acid, Aloe Vera and Retinol.

As printed on the tube, it helps improve the appearance of stretch marks, supports smoother-looking skin, moisturises dry areas and helps skin feel supple and nourished.

  • How to use: apply a generous amount to clean, dry skin on areas prone to stretch marks (abdomen, thighs, hips, breasts) and massage in circular motions until absorbed.
  • How often: twice a day.
  • Size and price: 50 g, Rs 1,990

The key caution: this cream contains retinol and is not recommended during pregnancy or breastfeeding unless advised by a doctor. We say this clearly because many people look for a stretch mark cream exactly when they are expecting. If you are pregnant, trying to get pregnant or breastfeeding, please talk to your doctor before using it.

Safe-use checklist for both creams

Before you start

  • Patch test. Apply a small amount on a small area, such as behind the ear for the face cream or the inner arm for the body cream, and wait 24 hours.
  • Check your skin. Don't apply on broken, injured or irritated skin, sunburn or open cuts.
  • Start one new product at a time. When you begin a retinol cream, avoid starting other new active products in the same weeks, so you can tell how your skin is reacting.

Every day

  • Clean, dry skin first. Both packs say to apply on clean, dry skin.
  • Keep away from the eyes. With the face cream, stay clear of the eye area.
  • Sunscreen in the day. With the Anti-Aging Cream, use sunscreen every day. For body areas that see the sun, it is sensible to protect them too.
  • Stop if irritation occurs. If your skin becomes red, stings, burns or peels in a way that bothers you, stop and let it calm down. If it doesn't settle, see a doctor.
  • Keep out of reach of children.

Which sunscreen to pair with the Anti-Aging Cream

Any daily SPF 50+ that you will actually wear is the right one. If your skin feels dry, the Invisible Sunscreen Cream SPF 50+ with Mango Butter and Vitamin E has a moisturising feel. If your skin gets oily, the Invisible Sunscreen Gel SPF 50+ is the lighter choice.

Apply it generously at least 15 minutes before going out, and reapply every two hours while you are in the sun or after sweating.

Can I use the two creams together?

They are made for different places. The Anti-Aging Cream is for the face, and the Stretch Mark Cream is for body areas such as the tummy, thighs, hips and breasts. Using each on its own area is fine for most people, but introduce them one at a time rather than starting both on the same day.

Setting the right expectations

Creams are cosmetic care. They can help skin look and feel smoother and more moisturised, but they can't promise to erase fine lines or stretch marks, and every person's skin responds differently. Regular use over weeks, not days, is the honest way to judge any cream.

Save with a combo

Every product is Rs 1,990. Any 2 are Rs 2,790, so the Anti-Aging Cream and a sunscreen together come to Rs 2,790.
